This research article reports the outcomes of a trial with people suffering from chronic insomnia who participated in SHUTi, an online intervention to improve sleep, compared to people who did not. Even 12 months after participating in the SHUTi program people using SHUTi reported improved sleep.

Summary

This trial included 303 patients with chronic insomnia. One half of patients participated in SHUTi (Sleep Healthy Using the Internet), an online, self-guided, intervention based on elements of cognitive behavioural therapy that runs for 6-9 weeks. The other half of patients received an information booklet (control group). SHUTi participants reported improvements for insomnia severity, the time it takes to fall asleep and waking up after sleep onset at 9 weeks, 6 months and 1 year after the intervention. This was not achieved in the control group. While this trial did not specifically include patients with cancer, SHUTi was also evaluated in patients with various types of cancer and sleep improved in the SHUTi group. SHUTi has been developed in the United States of America and has approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is available in other countries now, including Australia.
