Dealing with uncertainty, and the fear of cancer coming back (recurrence) or progressing, are important and difficult issues faced by many people who have been treated for cancer, as well as their families. Uncertainty about the future and fear of a recurrence is a common concern. 

Join Prof Mei Krishnasamy, Professor of Nursing (Cancer) at the University of Melbourne, and a panel of guest speakers including Associate Professor Haryana Dhillon (Psycho-oncologist, Behavioural Scientist and Senior Research Fellow at University of Sydney) and Dr Maria Ftanou (Director of Psychosocial Oncology, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Senior Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne), for a conversational Q&A session about living with uncertainty and fear of cancer recurrence, including some strategies and supports available to help cope with these challenges.  

This is a Q&A webinar, with a mix of frequently asked questions based on the speakers’ experience, and questions submitted by the webinar participants. It was recorded on 11th April 2024. 

About the speakers: 

  • Associate Professor Haryana Dhillon is a behavioural scientist, psycho-oncologist and a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Sydney and the Chair of the Psycho-Oncology Cooperative Research Group’s Scientific Advisory Committee. Their areas of research interests include cognition and physical activity in cancer populations, supportive and survivorship care for people with cancer and ensuring effective interventions are implemented.
  • Dr Maria Ftanou is the Director of Psychosocial Oncology at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and a Senior Research Fellow at the School of Population and Global Health at The University of Melbourne. She has over two decades of experience in the field of Psychosocial Oncology and mainly focuses on providing evidence -based interventions and improving the mental health outcomes for people living with cancer and their families.
