In this webinar you will hear from Prof Kate Drummond AM (Head of Neurosurgery at Royal Melbourne Hospital), Prof Mark Rosenthal (Medical Oncologist at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre), Prof Jon Emery (Professor of Primary Care Cancer Research, University of Melbourne), and Ms Jane Staker (Neuro-Oncology Nurse Consultant, St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne) to learn more about choosing your treatment team and navigating the system.

Our guests on this panel will be able to give you some practical information and answer your questions that may help you choose your treating team and navigate the health system, including how to select your treating team, how and when to get a second opinion, what are the differences between getting treated in the public vs private system, and what is the role of a General Practitioner (GP) in your treatment team?

About the speakers:

  • Prof Kate Drummond AM is the Head of Neurosurgery at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, and the project lead on the Brain Tumours Online project.
  • Prof Mark Rosenthal trained as a Medical Oncologist in Melbourne, Sydney, and New York. He received a Doctor of Philosophy at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research (1992-1996). He was Professor Director of the Department of Medical Oncology and Clinical Haematology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital from 2006-2016; Chair and Chief Medical Officer of Cancer Trials Australia (2006-2016); inaugural Chair of the Cooperative Trials Group for Neuro-Oncology (2007-2017) and was the Clinical Trials Lead for the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (2016-20). Professor Rosenthal is currently a Senior Staff Specialist in the Department of Medical Oncology at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Director of the Parkville Cancer Clinical Trials Unit.
  • Prof Jon Emery is the Herman Professor of Primary Care Cancer Research at the University of Melbourne, and the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre Primary Care Research and Education Lead. His research is focused on applying principles of implementation science and role of primary care in cancer including prevention, early diagnosis and survivorship. He leads a collaborative cancer research between Melbourne and Cambridge on cancer screening, risk assessment and early diagnosis.
  • Ms Jane Staker is a Neuro-Oncology Nurse Consultant from St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne. Jane’s role includes helping patients and their families navigate the health system after a brain tumour diagnosis..
